How CCTV can help you store Schedule 8 medicines safely
Closed-circuit television (CCTV) is a powerful asset when it comes to handling Schedule 8 (S8) medicines – substances with the potential for dependence or abuse. By placing cameras in areas where these products are stored, dispensed, and administered, managers can help to ensure that protocols are being followed properly. It’s all part of creating a secure environment where S8 medications stay safely out of harm’s way.
At Carollo Horton, we recently had a claim where expired S8s stored in a Return Unwanted Medicines bin (RUM bin) were discarded. None of the staff at the pharmacy knew who moved this RUM bin from inside the S8 safe and placed it with the regular collection service.
A CCTV camera covering the S8 safe in this instance could have helped to monitor compliance and provide evidence. For example, CCTV footage could show whether staff members were properly labelling and storing S8 medicines, checking patient identification and maintaining accurate records. This can help to ensure that S8 medicines are being used safely and effectively and can help to identify any training or education needs for staff members.
